Performance Measurement
Graphic communications companies seeking to measure their organization's current performance and chart a course for ongoing improvement will find a wealth of resources at NAPL, including our Performance Indicators and Management Plus programs and our Strategic Assessment service.
■ PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
NAPL Performance Indicators program tracks vital metrics printers need to compete in today's marketplace. Run by NAPL's Printing Economic Research Center (PERC), the service complements the macro data PERC provides through its Printing Business Index and other indicators by affording participants micro data on how their individual companies are performing.
Performance Indicators sets itself apart from traditional benchmarking programs by monitoring the critical metrics that are the most relevant in today's business environment and giving participants insights into their organizations' current performance and future prospects. Companies that participate in the service every month get a report on their performance compared with both internal and external metrics.
For information on the Performance Indicators services, email Andrew Paparozzi, NAPL vice president and chief economist, at apaparozzi@napl.org.

■ NAPL MANAGEMENT PLUS™ PROGRAM
The two-part NAPL Management Plus™ Program offers companies an opportunity to conduct an internal assessment of their management practices and receive external recognition for management excellence on an industry-wide stage.
Best Practices Assessment™
The NAPL Management Plus Best Practices Assessment™ is a free comprehensive self-administered review of seven critical management disciplines, which company leaders can use to determine how their management practices in each area measure up to industry standards.
By answering a series of questions related to their management practices in leadership/governance, strategic planning, financial performance, marketing/sales, operations, human resources, and community/industry relations, companies can gain a detailed assessment of their management prowess, revealing practices that are at a leadership level, as well as those that need improvement.
This comprehensive diagnostic tool is the foundation upon which NAPL has built its unique NAPL Member Work Plan for Success™. Based on the insights gained by this analytical evaluation of management competencies in every company segment, NAPL industry experts can help company leaders pinpoint areas of opportunity and develop a plan for maximizing their effectiveness.
Companies that have completed the NAPL Best Practices Assessment™ may also use it as part of their entry into NAPL's Management Plus™ Awards Program. Over three decades, hundreds of companies have taken advantage of the free assessment and more than 150 businesses have won industry honors as recipients of NAPL Management Plus™ Awards.
The NAPL Management Plus™ Awards Program offers companies an opportunity to gain recognition for their management achievement by submitting their NAPL Best Practices Assessment™ as part of their entry into one of the industry's most prestigious competitions. Awards Program entrants receive a detailed outside evaluation of their management strengths and weaknesses and become eligible for NAPL Management Plus™ Gold, Silver, or Merit Awards, given in several categories based on company size or in-plant status. Each year, one company is also honored with the William K. Marrinan Management Plus™ Hall of Fame Award for consistent excellence in the program, including having garnered at least five NAPL Management Plus™ awards.
The NAPL Management Plus™ Society
All NAPL Management Plus™ Award winners become members of the NAPL Management Plus™ Society, enabling them to display the Society emblem on all company promotional materials as a symbol of their dedication to excellence in their business practices.
William K. Marrinan NAPL Management Plus™ Scholarships
The winner of the NAPL Management Plus™ Hall of Fame Award is also provided with two $1,000 scholarships, funded by the program's sponsors, which it may donate to a recognized graphic arts school in its company's name. Winner of the top Gold Award in each category receives one $1,000 scholarship for a school of its choice.
Co-sponsored by NAPL, American Printer magazine and manroland, the awards are presented during a special dinner at NAPL's annual Top Management Conference. The 2009 awards will be presented on February 16, 2010 in Marco Island, Fla.
